Many people have been in a situation where a strange dog approaches sans a leash. Some consider using mace to protect themselves against such a situation.

In the event of a dog attack, it is better to have a game plan. Many people automatically go into fit or flight mode - more often flight. In this situation fight or flight is a bad idea. The safest response to an aggressive dog is to remain still. In fact, school staff teach children to remain still "be a tree." Another very important thing to remember is to avoid making eye contact with the dog. Dogs often take direct eye contact as your way of challenging them. If a dog attacks, the best thing to do is to roll into a ball "be a rock." Be sure to cover your neck in case of a bite to that area. In the event of a dog attack, you will be best served if you keep your wits about you. When your instincts say "run" use your head and stay calm.
