Transplant patients wait patiently to hear the news " we have secured a donor." However, for this particular patient, life had something else in store. As the Ann Arbor, Michigan patient was prepped for what would have been life saving surgery, the plane that was carrying the team, including surgeons and the donor organ, went down, taking the lives of everyone on board.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board investigator, John Brannen, the plane, a Cessna 550, crashed at approximately 5:00 p.m. One of the pilots reported difficulty steering due to the trim system. Shortly thereafter the plane crashed into the waters below. Everyone on board died.

It is unknown at this time whether the patient waiting for a donor will get an organ in time to save his life. He has been placed back on the donor list. This story is just tragic all the way around. It is terrible to loose anybody to an accident, but when people die who have a high degree of training in saving lives, it seems the loss is felt all the more.
