Night Goggles Given All Clear for Pilots

Driving at night is risky business. And trying to land a plane at night is even more risky. That is one reason why The Civil Aviation Safety Authority is now allowing the use of night-vision goggles for law enforcement and rescue pilots. Others are interested in this technology also. "It's a huge safety enhancement for landing in unsurveyed areas," said EMQ chief pilot Trevor Wilson.

This technology will assist greatly with searches for missing boats, which are currently done visually. Of course, there are rules and regulations to be followed with respect to this technology. "CASA's order covers helicopters operations in categories such as search and rescue, law enforcement, fire fighting and emergency medical services." Additionally, special training and the use of certain equipment is mandated by CASA.
