Ortho Evra is the first birth control patch approved by the FDA for use in the United States as a safe and effective way to control reproduction through a transdermal system. This form of birth was first marketed nationwide beginning in 2001.

In 2005, concerns about serious problems relating to the birth control patch began to surface. However, these claims were refuted by many experts. Nonetheless, concerns remain about the link between the use of this medication and fatal side affects.

Recent reports have stated that a serious birth control patch problem triples the risk of a fatal blood clot developing. The Ortho Evra patients who have had died as a result of blood clots, strokes, and heart attacks after using this contraceptive, have had no prior history of blood clots and/or cardiovascular problems.

Recently, a wrongful-death lawsuit was filed in San Francisco Superior Court alleging that the Johnson & Johnson Subsidiary, Ortho-McNeil, knowingly misinformed the public about the risks of taking the drug. Several other lawsuits have also been filed on behalf of women who have allegedly died from a serious birth control patch problem.
