Salmonella Contamination Proves Costly

Conagra Foods - they make everything from Banquet products, Chief Boyardee and Egg Beaters- estimate that their nationwide recall of peanut butter will cost them in the neighborhood of $50 to $60 million. Last week they announced that they would voluntarily recall Peter Pan Peanut Butter and Great Value Peanut Butter Products beginning with Product Code 2111. They fear possible salmonella contamination.

Conagra Foods is currently working closely with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate a statistical report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in response to a statistical report that these particular products may be linked to Salmonella. Salmonella is a bacteria that can enter the digestive tract in contaminated food and cause abdominal pains and violent diarrhea, at best. At worst, it can cause death.
