Salmonella Contamination Goes Globel

It has been widely reported that the particular peanut butter containing Salmonella that has been found in 41 of the 50 U.S. states was also sold in more than 60 other countries on three other continents and islands in the Caribbean and the Pacific, according to the manufacturer. Some of those sales were in Europe, South America, Africa, Brazil, Belize, British Virgin Islands, U. S. Virgin Islands, Iraq, India and Iceland to name but a few.

Stephanie Childs, a spokeswoman for the manufacturer, ConAgra Foods Inc., said Monday that word of the problem with the Salmonella tainted peanut butter has gone out everywhere peanut butter is sold under the Peter Pan and Great Value label: If the top on the jar has a number starting with ''2111,'' do not eat it.

Although, Ms. Childs' warning specifically targets jars with the code number beginning with 2111 on the lid, the FDA has recently increased their warning pertaining to the Peter Pan peanut butter brand to include any Peter Pan peanut butter dated from May 2006 forward. It seems one might be well advised to steer clear of both contaminated brands of peanut butter for the time being. It is noteworthy that the plant were the tainted product originated from is in Sylvester, Georgia and Georgia produces approximately 40 percent of the U.S. yield of peanuts.
