It was announced today that rat poison was found in the recalled pet food that unsuspecting pet owners have been feeding their faithful friends. Although, it is still unknown to scientists and state officials just how the rat poison got there.

According to Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker " the toxin was identified as Aminopterin, which is used to kill rats in some countries." Interestingly enough, aminopterin is not registered for killing rodents in the U.S., however it is used as a cancer drug. "It would make no sense to spray a crop itself with rodenticide," Rosenberg said, though he said grain shippers typically put bait stations around the perimeter of their storage facilities. The rat poison is so highly toxic that it is causing renal failure and kidney disease is both dogs and cats.

Although, additional studies into the tainted pet foods are ongoing, it is hoped that the immediate release of the test results will assist veterinarians in the treatment of the unfortunate animals who are suffering.
A complete list of the recalled products along with product codes, descriptions and production dates was posted online by Menu Foods and is available at http://tinyurl.com/2pn6mm. The company also designated two phone numbers that pet owners could call for information: (866) 463-6738 and (866) 895-2708.
