The FDA claim that the source of the pet food contamination appears to be wheat gluten, which is a protein source found in many pet foods. Yet many pet owners are making complaints about sick and dying pets that have only eaten dry food, which is not yet on the recall list.

The animal activist group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), claims that Menu Foods contacted Cornell University in the early part of March when cats in their labs stopped eating their food. After that it was almost a week before Menu Foods sent tissue and urine samples from sick animals for testing while acknowledging that the food was toxic. Yet it was two weeks later when Menu food finally announced the pet food recall. See time line pertaining to the contaminated pet food.
