Contaminated Pet Food - What to Look For

Today, U.S. federal officials announced that wheat flour was actually the contaminated pet-food ingredient from China that sickened dogs and cats. It was not wheat gluten or rice protein concentrate, as previously suspected.

It is believed that the wheat flour was deliberately spiked with melamine in order to give the ingredient a false protein reading. A false reading increases the value of the product. Two Chinese companies have already admitted to this practice. This disclosure also raises the question about how diligent companies have been in selecting and inspecting suppliers of raw ingredients for pet food products.

To date, the FDA has received unconfirmed reports of 4,150 cat and dog deaths since the first recall was announced on by Menu Foods March 16. At this time, Menu food faces more than 50 lawsuits from pet owners as a result of the contaminated pet food that they produced.
