In spite of the fact that dozens of studies strongly suggest that taking the diabetes drug Avandia points to a significantly increased risk of heart attack, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) previously acknowledged that fact, an advisory panel determined that Advandia could stay on the market.

While the FDA is not required to follow the advise of the advisory panel, it usually does. "Panelists said the drug's label should include a so-called "black-box" warning, the most severe the FDA can require, to flag that risk." Additionally, the experts also asked that the drug be studied further.

The New England Journal of Medicine publised a study that generated new concerns about the saftey of the drug. "The analysis of 42 studies revealed a 43 percent higher risk of heart attack for those taking Avandia compared with people taking other diabetes drugs or no diabetes medication. "
