What would you say if I told you that if a driver perceives the lane that he is driving on to be wide that driver, in all likelyhood, will drive much faster. It's true, and in Aliso Viejo they proved it.

According to John Whitman, city engineer " Since the city incorporated in 2001, the city has re-striped several streets to narrow down the lanes. By doing so, drivers tend to slow down because of the lack of space." Which in turn reduced automobile accidents.

The city spent approximately $40,000 to re-stripe about one mile of road. The lanes were reduced from 15 feet to 11feet. According to Whitman " The most effective use of re-striping was done on Wood Canyon Drive in 2004. Before the narrow lanes, there was one accident in that area every six weeks. Since the repainting, there have been two accidents in two years."
