Are Motorcycle Accidents a Health Epidemic?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in Asia, motorcycle accidents have become a public health epidemic. It seems that people from low and medium income families use motorcycles as their mode of transport. They even pick their children up from school on motorcycles. According to polls taken by WHO, 1.2 million people die of road traffic accidents every year, with 40 percent of the victims under the age of 25, while 20 million to 50 million are injured every year.

One way to improve the problem, according to the organization, is to improve the infrastructures. For example, they do not presently have separately lanes for motor vehicles and bikes. Another problem is that motor cycle helmets are not strictly enforced. As a result, there are many head injuries sustained in accidents. Just by using a helmet, the rate of head injury would be reduced by 40 percent. No doubt, many of the injured are children.
